Essaie Pas Announce New Album 'New Path', Stream "Complet Brouillé"

Montreal electronic/minimal/synthpop duo Essaie Pas (aka Marie Davidson and Pierre Guerineau) have announced they will release their new album 'New Path' on March 17 via DFA Records.

On this new LP, the duo take inspiration from Philip K. Dick’s A Scanner Darkly, a dystopian science fiction classic. The album sounds like the book reads – a voyeuristic, druggy, and paranoid narrative of existence in the surveillance state.

“I read the book a long time ago, maybe 15 years ago, and it had a strong impression on me,” explains Pierre. “In our previous work we always looked to music as inspiration in our lives, but this time we felt the desire to try something different, that’s not based on ourselves but on someone else’s universe. It was going to be more conceptual, more political.”

New Path touches on addiction, loss, and the lingering strength of identity within late capitalism’s mass media paranoia. It pins down the central character’s destructive tendencies, using this as a metaphor to explore the dichotomous rupture between our inner lives and our social environment, one that is often fed and soothed by various kinds of dependences.

“I think it touches us on many levels,” Pierre continues. “We can talk about drug addiction issues, we can talk about the mass surveillance world we live in, but there’s also the experience of loss, of grief. I was surprised by how the book felt so modern and accurate to the time we live in right now. Dick’s visions of surveillance are the reality of social control today.”

Toronto garage psych/post-punk band FRIGS have announced they will release their debut full-length album 'Basic Behaviour' on 23rd February through Arts & Crafts.

The ten-track album has been self-produced and was written and recorded over a period of 16 months in two locations: the band’s home studio and Toronto’s Union Sound Company.

The band have also shared their new single "Talking Pictures", which lyrically, according to vocalist Bria Salmena“is about the need to be stimulated. It was written during a period where I felt a lack of both external and internal encouragement, preventing me from thinking freely or creatively. Falling into a void of routine, I was distracting myself from real life experiences, and those experiences, once examined, seemed only filtered through interactions with technology and social media. In writing this song, I attempted to explore this void and my distracted state in hopes of losing any numbness I felt in my day-to-day life”.

Ride Announce New EP 'Tomorrow's Shore', Stream New Song "Catch You Dreaming"

British shoegaze pioneers Ride have announced they will release their new EP titled 'Tomorrow's Shore' on 16th February.

The follow-up to last year's album Pulsarwas recorded with Erol Alkan, the legendary DJ, producer and remixer who produced the band's latest album, Weather Diaries.

Speaking of ‘Catch You Dreaming’, lead guitarist and vocalist Andy Bell says: " “Catch You Dreaming” is written from the perspective of being one of the last two people alive, watching as the Universe is ending. The protagonist looks back over the time when humanity existed, realising that we as humans brought about our own inevitable demise. Then the couple look back over their own lives of shared memories and as they are sharing this moment, everything vaporises. It’s a love song about fate, nostalgia, and having no regrets.

" The song itself was intended to be a part of “Weather Diaries”, and recording started during the sessions in Autumn 2016. But we never managed to record a definitive version at the time and decided to come back to it later as part of a follow up EP, which is now finished, and titled “Tomorrow’s Shore”. The EP was made with an identical process to “Weather Diaries” and we see it as very much tied to the album. "

01. Pulsar
02. Keep It Surreal
