The Drums' Johnny Aries Announces Debut Solo Album 'Unbloomed'

The Drums' guitarist Johnny Aries has announced he will release his debut solo album titled 'Unbloomed' on August 26 via French Kiss.

Aries moved from his native England to New York last year, and the album was recorded in Brooklyn, "it’s something a parting shot towards England and my old life," Aries says. "Some of the songs are me lamenting things I’ve done, but some are also about letting go and looking toward greener pastures."

"All of these songs were written as soon as I got to New York. I felt like I had a fresh start and I should make something unhinged from anything people expected from me. It was a clean page for me to start something exciting." He explains.

"I wanted to make a record, and it felt like the best chance to do that would be when I came to America. I wanted to take the upheaval of my old band breaking up and moving here, and all the changes that came with that, and push them into this.”

Unbloomed isn't all about feeling blue, though. "I’m just looking for happiness, really; I’m trying to make sense of everything going on around me. The best thing to come out of that is the lyrical quality of the songs—it’s romantic, I suppose."

'Unbloomed' tracklist:

01. Unbloomed
02. This Grave Is My Bed Tonight
03. Bodybag
04. We’re Just Girls And Boys
05. To Be Desired
06. Human Nature
07. I’m A Dreamer
08. Ambulette Tape
09. You Belong To Me
10. Great Expectations

Aries has also shared the first taste of this solo effort "This Grave Is My Bed Tonight", a melancholic-pop song that has been added to our current playlist.

English indie rock band The Cribs are set to record their new album, and have announced that it will be produced by The Cars' Ric Ocasek.

Speaking to NME magazine, Ryan Jarman explained: "He doesn't do records like a gun for hire; he chooses a band. We've been trying to get him since the third record, now he thinks we're definitely good enough."

Jarman also explained The Cribs have enough material for the record, taking influence from The Replacements and 80s pop.

About future singles, Jarman said: "The one we've earmarked for the first single is the first song we wrote for the album, which never happens. It's a big, fuzzy pop song. We call it 'the geek rock one'."

Ric Ocasek have previously produced both Weezer's Blue and Green albums, and have also worked with the band on their forthcoming record ‘Everything Will Be Alright In The End'.

Johnny Marr To Release Second Solo Album 'Playland' In October

Former Smiths guitarist's Johnny Marr has announced he will release his second solo album titled 'Playland' on October 6 via Warner.

The works for the follow up to his last year's debut 'The Messenger', commenced in London in the Spring as soon as the year of touring supporting the album came to a close, and finds Marr continuing the creative connection with collaborator and co-producer Doviak as well as the other musicians who performed on the album and accompanying tour.

As Johnny states: “When The Messenger came out I kept on writing. I liked that the band had a momentum going on tour and a connection with the audience, and I thought that energy would be good to capture on the new record.”

Written around a common theme of “songs that move at the speed of life,” ‘Playland’ captures much of the spirit that made ‘The Messenger’ so memorable with energetic, post-punk songwriting complemented by Johnny Marr’s characteristic guitar style, thought-provoking lyrical ideas and poised vocal phrasing. “It’s important to sound like your environment and on this record that’s London and Manchester,” he adds. “The feeling of the cities and the people make it into the music.”

According to the press released, the title ‘Playland’ is inspired by ‘Homo ludens’, a 1938 book by the highly influential Dutch cultural theorist Johan Huizinga which explores the concept of play as a precursor and principal element of cultural development.

The tracklist for 'Playland' is as follows:

01. Back In The Box
02. Easy Money
03. Dynamo
04. Candidate
05. 25 Hours
06. The Trap
07. Playland
08. Speak Out Reach Out

The video was directed by Hiro Murai, who commented: "Not to get super heady about a music video concept, but I’m really interested in a pocket moment that takes place in a doomsday world. In the case of this video, that means Britt Daniel, the lead singer of Spoon, is cruising in a vintage Plymouth wagon through a very lackadaisical Sunset Drive kind of vibe, and it just so happens that the buildings are on fire behind him. Which is actually kind of what Los Angeles feels like sometimes anyway, metaphorically. 'Hey, once you own the chaos of the apocalypse, there’s a certain kind of calmness to it.'"

Last Week, Brooklyn NY indie poppers The Drums announced the release of their new single "Magic Mountain" for September, now the band are streaming the track.

Speaking about the song, vocalist Jonny Pierce says:

"Not since the Summertime EP has it been just Jacob and I left up to our own devices. Now that we’re back to just the two founding members, we figured we could do whatever we wanted and run with it. Together, we had just one goal: let go of any preconceived ideas that anyone has about The Drums and make songs to be as grand and majestic as we want them to be. "Magic Mountain" is a sparkling reflection of our last three years. It's about shedding off what binds you and protecting whats good, finding a safe place away from everyone and everything that wants to destroy you." (via Noisey).

Tommy Ramone, The Last Original Member of The Ramones, Dies Aged 62

Tommy Ramone, drummer of seminal New York punk band The Ramones, has died of cancer at the age of 62 at his home in the city.

Tommy was a Hungarian immigrant, born Erdélyi Tamás in Budapest, who came to the US in 1957, and played on the band's first three albums, co-producing two of them, before leaving in 1978, ostensibly because he was exhausted by the constant touring.

He kept his links with the Ramones, co-producing 1974′s Road To Ruin and 1984′s Too Tough To Die. He also produced the Replacements’ 1985 major-label debut Tim and Redd Kross’s 1987 album Neurotica. Later on, he played in the old-timey folk duo Uncle Monk, who released one self-titled album in 2006.

A message post on The Ramones Facebook page reads:
We are saddened to announce the passing of Tommy Ramone (nee Erdelyi), the original drummer for the Ramones, earlier today, 11 July 2014.
"It wasn't just music in The Ramones: it was an idea. It was bringing back a whole feel that was missing in rock music – it was a whole push outwards to say something new and different. Originally it was just an artistic type of thing; finally I felt it was something that was good enough for everybody." - Tommy Ramone, 1978
RIP Tommy.
Below, watch a video of  The Ramones performing their 1977's classic song "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker".

RIP Mr. Ramone
